The Michael J. Kosik collection contains a complete set of the Proceedings of the Anthracite Coal Strike Commission, from October of 1902 to February of 1903 and Proceedings and Resolutions of District No. 1, 7, 9 of the UMW Joint Conventions. A second grouping of the collection consists of Mr. Kosik's handwritten and typed notes, taken while chairman of the Anthracite Board of Conciliation, concerning the anthracite coal industry. There are research notes and essay drafts that tell the story of the 1900 strike, John Mitchell, his part in the strike of 1902 and President Roosevelt's intervention, and concerning racial and cultural conflicts in Anthracite Mining and a History of Miner's Unions. A dozen photographs of the interior of coal mines are included. A third part of the collection contains newspaper clippings and pamphlets regarding the United Mine Workers of America, John Mitchell, and Anthracite Coal. An item of particular interest is an early minute book of the Miners Benevolent Association (March 1863-May 1871) and of the Miners Union (April 1868-May 1871) based in Archbald, Pennsylvania.
